The Mass Rapid Transit System in Chennai was the first elevated railway line to be constructed in India. Though a sparsely used railway line, the MRTS runs parallel to the shoreline of Chennai connecting 17 stations. A system entirely created to cater to commuters in the city, it is expected to be taken over by the Chennai Metro Rail soon.
